“Mr. Lawson,” Nathan began, his voice calm and level. “You just testified under oath that Mr. Adams agreed to participate in this demonstration voluntarily. Is that your sworn testimony?”

Derek swallowed hard. “Yes.”

Nathan turned his laptop screen toward the courtroom monitors. “Your Honor, I would like to enter Exhibit A into evidence. This is the unedited, 4K video recording captured by an attendee of the Friday session.”

Nathan hit play. The courtroom speakers crackled to life. Derek’s arrogant voice echoed through the wood-paneled room. Somebody go get the janitor. The video showed Derek’s friends marching me out of the hallway. It showed Derek spreading his arms, mocking me. Tonight’s volunteer! You ready, Roach?

Nathan paused the video. “Mr. Lawson, let me ask you again. At any point in this video, does Mr. Adams say yes? Does he nod his head? Does he sign a liability waiver? Does he express any form of consent?”

Derek stared at the screen, his face turning pale. “I… it was implied.”

“It was coerced,” Nathan corrected sharply. “He was summoned and surrounded. But let’s look at the context of this ‘friendly invitation.'”

Nathan spent the next twenty minutes systematically dismantling Derek’s life. He entered Exhibits B through F. He played every single TikTok video Derek had ever posted of me. The courtroom watched in dead silence as Derek forced me to wipe the mat with my bare hands. They watched him kick me into a wall. They watched his friends wrench my arms behind my back while I emptied the trash.

A heavy, uncomfortable silence settled over the room. One of the reporters in the back row actually covered her mouth in disgust. The veterans in the gallery crossed their arms, their expressions turning to stone.

“Your Honor,” Nathan said, turning back to the judge. “This is not a case of an isolated misunderstanding. This is a highly documented, heavily monetized pattern of severe harassment spanning over a month. The plaintiff filmed himself humiliating my client repeatedly, posted that content for financial profit, and then organized a live-streamed event specifically designed to physically degrade him in front of an audience.”

Nathan turned his sights back to Derek. “Mr. Lawson, how much ad revenue did your TikTok account generate from videos featuring Mr. Adams?”

Whitfield sprang up. “Objection! Irrelevant!”

“Overruled,” Judge Davis snapped. “I want to hear the answer.”

Derek looked panicked. “I… I don’t run the analytics. I don’t know the exact numbers.”

“That’s fine, I do,” Nathan said smoothly, pulling a printed spreadsheet from his binder. “Exhibit G, Your Honor. Financial records subpoenaed directly from the platform’s creator fund. Your account received six thousand, eight hundred dollars in the ninety days prior to this incident. Seventy-one percent of that revenue was generated by videos specifically featuring Jerome Adams. You personally profited four thousand, eight hundred and twenty-eight dollars off of his daily humiliation.”

Grant Lawson’s face drained of color. He put his head in his hands.

“And finally, Your Honor,” Nathan said, lifting the thick manila folder. “Exhibit H. Three prior complaints filed with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation against Lawson Combat Academy. All three allege extreme bullying and coerced physical contact by Derek Lawson. All three were buried under non-disclosure agreements.”

Whitfield was on his feet again, shouting. “Objection! Those settlements are strictly confidential under state law!”

“The financial payouts are sealed,” Nathan countered loudly. “The original state complaints are public record. The Lawsons just assumed a janitor wouldn’t have the resources to find them.”

Judge Davis held up a hand, silencing the room. She spent a long time reviewing the documents in the folder. Then, she looked up and addressed the bailiff. “Play the fight video one more time. Half-speed.”

The entire courtroom watched the four-minute video again. They watched Derek throw a full-speed, aggressive roundhouse kick at my head. They watched me flawlessly sidestep. They watched the takedown. They watched me apply the choke.

“Note for the record,” Judge Davis said softly, almost to herself. “The respondent threw exactly zero strikes. No punches. No kicks.”

She watched Derek tap on the mat, and she watched me release him instantly and walk away.

The judge took off her glasses and folded her hands. She looked down at the Lawsons with a gaze that could have frozen boiling water.

“The  court finds absolutely no basis for the plaintiff’s claims,” Judge Davis announced, her voice ringing clear across the room. “The video evidence irrefutably shows that the respondent was brought onto the mat without his consent, under extreme duress and public coercion. Furthermore, the force used by Mr. Adams was entirely proportional, highly controlled, and strictly defensive in nature. He applied zero strikes and released the hold the fraction of a second the plaintiff submitted.”

She picked up her gavel. “This civil complaint is dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, this court is formally forwarding the evidence of systemic harassment and the prior complaints to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, along with a recommendation for a full, independent audit of Lawson Combat Academy’s safety protocols and operating licenses. We are adjourned.”

The gavel slammed down like a gunshot.

The courtroom erupted. The veterans in the gallery stood up and cheered. Brenda let out a massive breath, tears welling in her eyes. Derek sat frozen in his chair, staring at the table. Grant Lawson didn’t even look at his son; he just stood up and stormed out the side door, leaving his lawyer behind.

I sat completely still. My hands were flat on the wooden table. The crushing weight that had been sitting on my chest for a month finally lifted.

Nathan put a heavy, warm hand on my shoulder. “It’s over, Jerome.”

I looked up at him, wiping a single stray tear from my cheek. “No, Nathan,” I said quietly. “I don’t think it is.”

I was right. The courtroom victory was just the spark. The fallout was an absolute inferno.
