My nephew brought his MMA buddies to our family barbecue and spent the whole afternoon mocking my father’s limp, his faded work clothes, the way his hands shook when he carried the potato salad. When my dad accidentally knocked over a folding chair, my nephew grabbed his arm and said, “Let me help you, Grandpa — before you hurt yourself.” My father just looked at him with those flat eyes I’d seen a thousand times and said, “I’m fine, son.” Then my nephew laughed and said, “Come on, show us what you’ve got, old man.” My father reached for the chair with his scarred hand — the one missing a finger — and what happened next made the entire backyard go silent. I’ve never seen a man drop so fast.

My father’s dog tag had been in my pocket for fifteen years — the same day he disappeared in Beirut, I became someone else. I took a job cleaning floors at a combat gym because nobody talks to the janitor. Nobody asks questions. I liked that. But when the gym’s golden boy black belt shoved my shoulder and laughed, “Ten seconds. Survive,” something in me snapped. I tried to walk away. I really did. Then he mocked the one thing I couldn’t ignore — and I set my mop down. What happened next on that mat made the whole gym go silent. And when the old veteran in the back saw the tape on my forearm, his face went pale. He knew what I was before I did.

PART 2 The silence in Hollow Creek Combat Gym was almost sacred now. A heavy, deliberate stillness that seemed to stretch the very air. The usual clatter of gloves hitting bags, the...
